Outback Thunda is an iconic monster truck that has been thrilling audiences for over two decades. From its humble beginnings as a Bronco Horse for a Brisbane-based Rugby League team, Thunda has evolved into a true Australian legend.
In 2000, Clive Featherby, the founder of KC’s Fireworks Displays Australia, was running a horse-shaped monster truck known as Bronco Magic for the Brisbane Bronco’s Rugby League team. Featherby had always dreamed of taking his truck to the world stage, and he knew he needed a name that would reflect its Australian heritage. After much consideration, he settled on Outback Thunda, a fitting moniker for a truck that embodied the spirit of the Australian outback.
Featherby quickly realized that Bronco Magic’s dark brown color wasn’t ideal for night shows. The truck would disappear into the darkness, making it difficult for spectators to see. Inspired by the vibrant red hues of the Australian outback, Featherby decided to repaint Thunda in a bold red color. This change not only made Thunda more visible but also gave it a more kid-friendly and approachable look.
In 2020, Thunda underwent a major transformation with the help of monster truck maestro Kreg Christensen. Christensen built a brand new chassis for Thunda, which was then shipped 12,000 kilometers to Australia. There, Thunda was outfitted with a new multi-piece body by Lindsay Houston of LDI Kustom Signs. After a successful two-season run in the USA, Thunda returned to Australia, where it was transformed into the Aussie version of The Legend Bigfoot.
Thunda is a powerhouse on wheels, boasting a Custome build, Three Seater Chassis, a 540 Big Block Chevy engine, and a two-speed Powerglide transmission. Weighing approximately 7.5 tonnes, Thunda can consume nearly 100 liters of methanol (alcohol) at an average show. Driven by the experienced and passionate Clive Featherby, Thunda has competed in over 600 shows across every state and territory in Australia.
